This academic year I’ve had an opportunity to work with some early-career academics. These are newly-minted PhDs that are in their first year on the tenure-track. What’s really scary is that they sincerely believe all the woke dogma. Older people – those in their forties, fifties or sixties – might parrot the woke mantras because it’s what everybody in academia does and you have to survive. But the younger generation actually believes it all. Transwomen are women, black students fail calculus because there are no calc profs who “look like them,” ‘whiteness’ is the most oppressive thing in the world, the US is the most evil country in history, anybody who votes Republican is a racist, everybody who goes to church is a bigot but the hijab is deeply liberating. I gently mocked some of this stuff (like we normally do among older academics), and two of the younger academics in the group I supervise actually cried. Because they believe all this so deeply, and I’d even say fanatically, that they couldn’t comprehend why I wasn’t taking it seriously. -- From a web article by Rod Dreher entitled "Postcard From Pre-Totalitarian America"
I was shocked by the reaction I got in 2005 when I spoke to packed audiences on most of Maine's college campuses. My speech was entitled "The Vision Place of Souls." I went sincerely hoping to lay down some ideas in an academic environment that would prove challenging, though respectful, during a highly charged political campaign. The events became so threatening that I nearly had to contemplate hiring my own security. Fortunately the events didn't reach that point. But we did lose the campaign that fall. We had prevailed in two previous statewide referendum contests. At issue was adding the phrase "sexual orientation" to the Maine Human Rights Act.
I learned that year that the youth were true believers in all things sexual orientation. They were drinking deeply from the devil's diabolically poisoned ideological well concerning all things sexual outside the historic and workable American rules concerning marriage. The dirty seed of relaxed expectations related to sexuality had pressed through America's cultural and religious soil and become an invasive and all-consuming full grown ugly plant. The government forced feeding of the sexual revolution's rotten fruit was being jammed into our social, political and religious digestive system. America is now excreting profoundly insane ideas beyond sexuality. Having developed an insane new alphabet to inform the ongoing discussion about sex we have moved on to include gender. None of it makes any sense to anyone who is still able to think.
We can forget about most colleges, especially when it comes to what we used to call the humanities. There is almost nothing human left. There's certainly no goodness, truth or beauty. It's all ugliness, egalitarianism and wokeness. And the brainwashing bill becomes more expensive every year. It's become so expensive that the socialists are leading with a pledge of free college to win votes from the overtaxed and numb working class. You can't blame them for feeling numb. They've seen their wages climb, and their lives become more comfortable over their lifetime since the end of the second World War. In their relaxed and comfortable post War bubble, fat on the promise of endless credit and debt, they lost touch with reality. It looks like their children and grandchildren will have to pay the price.
It would be wrong to think that the older generation isn't starting to pay the price in new anxieties, and a collapsing society. I spent the last month walking my mom and dad through the last days of my father's life. Outside of the impressive results that sometimes emerge from the science and technology of modern medicine I was struck by the chaos and lack of love. I'm having similar experiences as I walk alongside my wife during her treatment for ovarian cancer. We don't have a health CARE system anymore. We have a health system that is mostly focused on the costs and the malpractice risks.
Having turned our backs on God we've decided to value everything based on the amount of pleasure we receive, and the amount it costs. We cannot sustain this over time. We will either resurrect our religion or collapse into something more brutal and bloody than what the Soviet Union became under the dictator Josef Stalin. This year's presidential election will reveal much about our nation's potential. The popularity of socialism on the Left is concerning. The meltdown of Main Stream Media is encouraging. Donald Trump's unflagging popularity provides some hope while his commitment to Israel and sodomy gives pause.
The youngsters cited in the opening quote need to read the Gulag Archipelago by Alexander Solzhenitzyn. Then they will have something real to cry about. They will be exposed to the end game for their Marxism and Socialism. It ain't pretty. It's unhinged brutal.
Paul the Apostle got it right when he wrote to the Romans:
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one towards another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, relentless, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
